Compare European and Asian art techniques in the galleries and interpret Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, using colored conté pastel on sanded paper, and mimic rhythmic Asian brushwork, using graphite.

Play with watercolor and learn about this unique, transparent medium. Experiment with color mixing, watercolor washes, and the way paint and water work together to create interesting effects and textures.

Use the human form as inspiration for relaxed gesture-drawing exercises to hone your observation skills in a unique way—through the study of yoga poses.

CANCELED - Bojagi Masterclass Workshop: Friday, May 15, 1:30–4:30 p.m. or Saturday, May 16, 10:00 a.m. –4:00 p.m. (ages 16 and up).
Don’t miss this special opportunity to take a masterclass workshop with Korean textile artist Youngmin Lee. The artist, who calls the San Francisco Bay area home, will lead two workshops on the art of bojagi (Korean wrapping cloths) in conjunction with the exhibition Gold Needles: Embroidery Arts from Korea. Pieced together from small scraps of cloth, bojagi is the most unique form of Korean textile art. Using traditional techniques, Youngmin teaches basic jogakbo construction and shows how to use many small pieces of ramie fabrics, silk organza, and Korean silk gauze to create a geometric-patterned bojagi.

Learn how to turn anything into jewelry, from toys to leftover costume jewelry. Mix and match objects to create one-of-a-kind earrings or necklaces.

This workshop introduces the history of the encaustic technique, the ancient art of painting with molten beeswax. Learn a variety of techniques, including how to build layers of pigmented wax and to fuse, embed, and collage objects.

Learn the basics of screen printing, along with some simple layering techniques. The flow will focus on the process of screen printing and developing a project inspired by the museum collection.

CANCELED - Block Printing on Clay: Four Fridays, April 24 - May 15, 6:30–8:30 p.m. (No class April 10)
This class will combine basic ceramic hand-building techniques with printmaking, to guide you through making original works of functional art with unique and interesting surfaces. You will design and carve your own printing blocks and then use those to create both relief and printed design on your pieces.

*PLEASE NOTE: All-Ages Workshops are an in-depth studio experience. Children under 14 must take the class with a registered adult to help translate instructions and offer guidance with the use of adult tools. All children must be at least 8 years old. Adults without children are welcome to attend!

Registration is first-come, first-served. Most classes are limited to 16 participants. If minimum enrollment is not met one week before the workshop or first workshop in the series, the workshop or workshop series will be canceled and all enrolled participants will be notified; no further registrations will be accepted to reinstate the class. Supply lists and class syllabi are provided within one week of the first class date unless otherwise noted. High schoolers may enroll in adult classes with guardian permission.
